The controversy of David Dobrik

Two apology videos end in more controversy for the YouTube star

April 27, 2021

David Dobrik is under fire for multiple allegations against him and his vlog squad.

David is one of the most popular YouTubers as he has 18.5 million subscribers. He is mostly known for his vlogs that contain him and friends doing crazy things, but he also has a podcast called “Views”. His popularity and fame seemed to be increasing rapidly until recent events may have led to his downfall.

David Dobrik and his vlog squad have been recently faced with multiple allegations. He was faced with former vlog squad member Seth stating he was sexually assaulted in one of David’s vlogs, Nick Keswani, who suffers from dwarfism and is blind in his left eye, stating he was mocked by David in multiple vlogs, but David didn’t really address any of these allegations until an article was published by Kat Tenbarge. In the article it gave detail on many accusations of misconduct and exploitation against vlog squad members including a woman accusing Dominykas Zeglatis, a friend of David, of rape.

David responded to this with a two minute and 30 second apology video “Let’s talk” in which he posted on his second channel. In the video David apologized to the victims, stated he separated from some of his friends and is a different person then he was in the past, and emphasized the importance of consent as he states, “Consent is something that’s super, super important to me. Whether I’m shooting with a friend or shooting with a stranger, I always make sure that whatever the video I’m putting out, I have the approval from that person.”

After his apology video, “Let’s talk,” he faced with a lot of backlash. The public responded to this negatively as it came off as insincere and David blaming his friends rather than taking accountability. David had also lost sponsorships with Seatgeek, Doordash, Hellofresh, Spark Capital, and Dispo. Due to the backlash and loss of sponsorships, David made another apology video titled “03/22/21” and posted it on his main channel.

In this seven minute and 17 second video David addresses sexual assault allegations against his childhood friend Dominkyas Zeglatis and apologized to the victims as he stated, “I am sorry that I took Dom’s word for what happened in certain situations…because I couldn’t wrap my head around a childhood friend of mine doing this to people and actually hurting people.” He also apologized for his actions and announced he will be taking a break from YouTube.

Although he gave a more sincere apology, he still faces backlash as some people believe he only posted the apology after losing many of his sponsorships.

YouTube also responds to this and demonetizes many of David’s Channels and Dom’s channel.“We have strict policies that prohibit sexual harassment on YouTube and take allegations of sexual assault very seriously. We have temporarily suspended monetization on David Dobrik and Durte Dom channels for violating our Creator Responsibility policy,” stated a YouTube spokesperson.

Some fans seem to have forgiven David and have moved on, but David is still losing popularity and subscribers.  One of them being junior Kellie Boyle who stated, “I don’t know if I will be able to watch David’s videos anymore.”
