We’ve all been in uncomfortable conversations with seemingly no end, so how do you alleviate the awkwardness? Of course, through a bit! A bit is a verbal phrase or small physical act which is primarily used in a sarcastic, comedic, or ironic manner.
Students regularly utilize this situational technique, whether you realize it or not. Keep an ear out in the future if you hear an idiom or phrase that is funny despite context.
“My favorite bit is to say ‘it’s not my business’ to any situation that I am involved in,” stated junior Emma Zellers.
An instance she would use this bit would be a hypothetical scenario: “Emma, you haven’t submitted any homework for the past three weeks.” “Hey teach! It’s not my business— sorry!”
“I like to say ‘your mama’! You can say it whenever you want; it’s like a free phrase,” said freshman Colin VanDorren.
This previously overused phrase has lost its popularity, but a comeback is coming with people satirically implementing it in sentences. Although VanDorren never specified instances to incorporate the saying, he presumably implied that it can be appropriately used however.
“I like to say ‘slay’ to anything,” said sophomore Gabby Silva. “You can use it in any situation.”
As an easy response to good news, an adjective to speak on, or even a verb, ‘slay’ is a very versatile term. I got a promotion! Slay! How did you perform? Very slaytastically! Do you like me? The slayest person I know, of course!
“I like to do the ‘don’t talk to me’ chant. I use it whenever there’s a confrontational conversation that I don’t want to be a part of”, said junior Abigail Gress.
Gress, referring to the chant that goes ‘Stop, don’t talk to me. Loser Lameo wannabe like oh, totally. To-to-totally’, describes her contributing this phrase in any situation in which she is confronted.
Seemingly, these words, phrases, and add-ons are utilized in a comedic fashion, alleviating potential tension within an uncomfortable situation.
