The girls basketball team has a shortage of girls for this season, with only five players. The lack of interest hasn’t been this bad in years, so they are working tirelessly on recruiting new players to come to their open gyms.
There are multiple factors that have led up to this change in interest. For instance, the girls basketball team has not had the most successful past.
“No one really talks about girls basketball and they didn’t have a great record so there isn’t much respect for the girls,” said sophomore Elliot Policare.
It is also thought that more recognition for the sport needs to be given.
“We need to post on jungle insta and have coaches talk to other sports,” said sophomore Ellie Brown.
“Maybe more female representation, like a female coach. It would also be better if the girls basketball team got more recognition like games being mentioned on the announcements,” added Policare.
These things might help more girls in the high school become aware of the lack of players and consider trying out for the team.
Current players already on the team need to make sure interested girls start playing and getting ready for try-outs.
“I think girls should come to the open gyms to see if they’d be interested,” said senior Leah Santoro.
Open gyms are every Tuesday and Thursday in October, from 6:30-8:00 until practices start in November.
