The boy’s lacrosse team as of late has declined in numbers and failed to keep a coach for a few years. At this moment, the team doesn’t have a coach or maybe even enough players to have a team.
In the 2020-2021 season, the boy’s lacrosse team was thriving and during that season, the team had a 7-10 record and beat Freedom (10-8), Pleasant Valley (18-6), and Nazareth (13-7). They even went on to the district semifinals where they ended up losing to Allentown Central Catholic. That year, they had an abundance of athletes on the team and were coached by middle school teacher, Charles Austin.
“I had a lot of fun coaching at the high school level, especially with the support of Nate and Pat, my two assistant coaches,”said Austin when asked about his coaching seasons.
The boys currently have no coach or even any coaches in line for the upcoming spring season. This has gotten a lot of stir in the team and the players who plan on playing in the upcoming season. Many players feel discouraged due to the lack of players they have at the moment and also not having a coach.
“It’s discouraging, last season all of us tried our hardest to compete against the teams that played but we consistently got outplayed.” said sophomore Reinhard Brasko who played on the team last season.
Many lacrosse players just want to be able to play the sport they love.
“If it is a possibility, I would play at close-by-programs such as Southern Lehigh or Moravian Academy,” said sophomore and previous captain of the 2023 season, Ryan Keeney about what he would do if there wasn’t a boy’s lacrosse program at Saucon.
Although Keeney and others feel this way, some do not. Some have a different approach and feel like they can’t play lacrosse unless they are in a Saucon jersey.
“That’s a good question, if there was an opportunity to play for a different team I don’t know if I would take it. There is a certain feeling that you get when you wear a jersey with your school on it. Even if you win or lose, you know that you want to do the best for your school. I don’t know if I could give the same effort for a different school,” said Brasko.
In conclusion, the boys lacrosse team at Saucon is looking for more players and is in search of a new coach. They have many people who hope to be able to continue playing a sport they love.
