As the school year draws to an end, high school students eagerly turn their attention towards the upcoming event of prom. The excitement and anxiety as students try to pick out dresses or suits to wear, and find people to ask is uncontrollable. However suits, dresses, and dates aren’t the only things that are going to rile students up this year.
Prom tickets are over $80 this year. According to pennlive.com, the average prom ticket is around $45 to $65.
This overinflated price means that many students’ dreams of being prom king or queen can never come true. High prices could be due to a lack of fundraising that happens over the year and throughout high school.
An additional dilemma associated with the night is the theme of the dance. This year, the prom committee has decided to have the dance be masquerade themed. This has resulted in some confusion because people don’t know whether they should be looking for masks in addition to fancy clothes.
“I don’t know if I like the mask idea. I’m trying to get the best bank for my buck with my dress. Looking for a mask feels like overkill,” said junior Katryna Price.
She also stated her qualms about ticket prices, “It’s hard to allocate a good amount of money to picking a nice dress with these ticket prices being so high.”
“$160 just for me and my girlfriend to get in is pretty rough,” said junior Connor Riley.
Furthermore Riley stated “I don’t really care about the masks, it’s sort of hard though because I want to make sure I match with my girlfriend.”
In response to some of the backlash to the event the student government stated that while they can’t do anything about the price of tickets they may have been able to sort out the mask situation.
“We plan on giving some cheap paper masks out as a party favor so that anyone wanting to wear a mask that doesn’t have their own can be included,” said junior class Vice President Peter Albano.
This solution raises more problems however as some people have a problem with the type of masks the school may provide.
“I don’t want to spend my time doing my makeup for prom if it’s just going to be covered up by a mask,” said Kichline.
