The 96th Academy Awards are coming up this March 10, with stars from all over the world congregating at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel was announced to host in a long Barbie themed promo where the 10 nominations for Best Picture were listed off in varying movie puns.
This year’s nominations for best picture include: “The Holdovers,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Maestro,” “The Zone of Interest,” “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Video production teacher, Mr. Beau Schleicher offered his thoughts about the awards and said, “I think “Oppenheimer” is the clear leader for Best Picture. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. both delivered excellent performances. “Zone of Interest” is a close runner up.”
This thought is widely shared, and Variety states Oppenheimer is a stand out film for Best Picture. It was a huge success this summer earning $953.8 million at the box office. Its historical subject about the atomic bomb and star studded cast led to its large reception.
Allentown Central Catholic senior Natalie Tucker is also rooting for “Oppenheimer” (Cillian Murphy), but has different favorites from the best picture list. “My favorite from all the nominees was “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a movie about a series of murders in the Osage community. “I watch the Oscars every year and I am excited to see them this year,” added Tucker.
Oscar buzz is certainly varied and senior Fiona Stern said,“I’m not really rooting for any movie, I think they’ve all been recognized enough. Maybe “Oppenheimer” for Irish pride. I’ll say “Barbie” is my favorite from the ones nominated.”
Another important aspect of the Oscar’s is the celebrity coverage and all the outfits that are being showcased. Some people watch just to see the glamor and the dresses, or to see live footage of their favorite celebrities.“I love watching the red carpet, I’ll be excited with whoever shows up. I always love all the outfits,” Stern added.
The guest list this year includes big names such as Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Ryan Gosling, Leonardo DiCaprio, and more.
