Homecoming is right around the corner and will be here before we know it. Homecoming is a major high school event that affects all the students in school and is arguably one of the most significant events for students during the school year. Students obsess over outfits, dates, and the leading events before the big dance on October 12th, 2024. But what events are leading up to homecoming this year? What do students have to look forward to before the dance?
This past week, the senior class voted for the 2024 homecoming court nominees, and they were announced over the loudspeaker by math teacher, Cheri Chisesi, this past Friday. The senior class must vote for 6 male and 6 female candidates for the homecoming court, but to our surprise, this year’s court has 7 male and 7 female members of the court. Our homecoming king will be announced at the community pep rally days before the dance, and our homecoming queen will be announced during halftime at the homecoming varsity football game, October 11th.
“Each senior is put in a list and then I’m the only one who sees it… if there is a tie then we go to seven members for each gender which is what we had to do this year,” explained SGA advisor, Cheri Chisesi.
The week of homecoming, SGA hosts and plans Spirit Week. Spirit Week is a school-wide event containing different themes for teachers, students, and faculty to unite and dress up each day in the spirit of homecoming. Spirit weekdays are decided by SGA members on the spirit committee. The senior chair of the committee and their junior co-chair decide the days together, and then all students and faculty receive an email with the daily schedule of themes. Spirit week themes have not been decided yet for the 2024 year, but a Google form has been sent out for the student body to vote on themes as the week quickly approaches.
“We also handle the school pep rally, and run the snack stand at homecoming,” said senior SGA member and homecoming court nominee, Zoe Sauvagnargues.
SGA plays a major role in planning events for homecoming. The community pep rally and bonfire, also planned by SGA is October 10th, the day before the homecoming football game. It is decided that if the weather takes a turn and we cannot hold the bonfire on the 10th, it will be rescheduled for the following week on the 17th. The bonfire for the community pep rally is built by the seniors and then burned at the end of the rally amongst the student body and community. There is a lot of work that goes into planning and organizing this event, so we would like to give a special thanks to the senior class advisor, Lisa Allen, and all the administration helping organize along the way.
“I have a group of wonderful officers who are organized and they work well with me. Phone calls have been made and are preparing on all fronts,” said Allen, the senior class advisor.
Along with the community pep rally, there is an in-school pep rally on October 11 in the gym. This is also organized by SGA and is planned to raise spirits and excitement for the upcoming weekend.
On Friday, October 11, the big homecoming varsity football game is being held at the stadium. After last year’s unfortunate loss against Southern Lehigh, hopes are raised for a possible win this year against Pen Argyl. During halftime make sure to stick around, as the homecoming queen for the 2024 year will be crowned.
After all these events are said and done, the magical week comes to an end with the homecoming dance on October 12. This year’s homecoming dance theme is a unique glow-in-the-dark. So get your spirit, school pride, dresses, and suits ready for homecoming week.
