Dewey Fire Company is looking for new members to join their team of volunteer firefighters, and support the community.
To start off, two severe fires occurred before Dewey was created, one destroyed Christ Lutheran Church on Main Street in Hellertown, and another burned a barn along with multiple stables to the ground. The citizens of Hellertown realized they needed to organize a fire fighting unit, and that’s how Dewey Fire Co. came to be.
Dewey Fire Company, to this day has an amazing crew and chief. They treat each other like family and support the community with enthusiasm. If you join the team, you do not become an official member right away, until you are voted in by the board members. However, you can still participate in training and events.
Now many people ask when faced with the decision of volunterring, “What I can do? I’m only a teenager.” The answer is, you can do a lot, although you can’t respond to calls until you’re eighteen and get cleared on a truck (which means you passed the truck test). You can still train to become the best firefighter you can be until those requirements are met. Trainees attend many special training events such as a structure burn. This training is very important but dangerous as it involves throwing heavy ladders and working in an environment with real fire.
If you are interested in joining the Dewey Fire Co., arrive at 502 Durham Street, Hellertown, Pa, 18055 on any Monday at 6:30 pm.
Make sure your parents fill out the necessary paperwork. You can also do this online by visiting the department’s website https://deweyfireco.org/join-the-fire-department/
