The varsity golf team entered the Colonial League tournament Monday morning looking to win for the first time since 2009. Expecting the match on Wednesday to be their last after being in a three way tie. But Thursday night they received news that they would be competing in the leagues for the first time since 2019 due to their win against Easton this would make them the only team to beat a 3A team.
The players struggled in the beginning, for most of them this was their first time playing this course. Hole one was a 403 yard par four, most of the team struggled on this one with six out of the eight players shooting a six and the lowest was freshman Anthony Albano with five.
Some of the team continued to struggle but junior Reinhard Brasko started to have success after having three pars in a row on hole 6, 7, and 8. Junior Renzo Ochotorena also started to heat up after having pars on hole 2, 4, 5 and 7 on the first 9 and then had 2 more pars on the last 9.
Albano also had success after having a par on hole 2 and a birdie on hole 8 which was a 175 yard par 3. “I was looking down the fairway of hole 8 and I was trying to decide what to use. I’m confident with my irons so I was leaning towards one of them but I saw my hybrid driver and decided to use that. I aimed towards the flag, got the ball a couple yards within the hole and knocked down the putt for the birdie” said Albano, who is a first year golf player.
Ultimately though this was not enough to advance, the team’s three highest places were Brasko at 26, Ochotorena at 36 and Albano at 41.
Although they couldn’t get farther this year they are still proud of how far they did come this year. They went 6-8 last year and this year they improved to 8-4 under new head coach, Tim Shook. After improving by two wins this year, they hope to do the same or even better next year.
