The Philadelphia Phillies have had an insane season. After starting the season off stronger than the last, having a slump mid-season, and quickly coming back from said slump to have the best record in the current baseball season, they’re most certainly a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs. But what happens then? There are plenty of teams that also have had crazy seasons. While the Phillies have easily managed their playing skills during the season, the postseason is a whole different story. They’ll most likely be up against teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, and the toughest of them all, the Los Angeles Dodgers. So do the Phillies have what it takes? What do they need to improve? To help answer these questions, I did a brief Phillies Q&A with baseball expert and Phillies fan since 1980, Saucon parent, Travis Spencer.
Q: “What do you think of the Phillies this year?”
A: “Having the best record in baseball says a lot. We need to worry about the present, and the playoffs when they happen.”
Q: “What are some things that are key in winning the playoffs and the World Series?”
A: “Consistent pitching is a key factor, as well as staying healthy and not underperforming. Those are essential for making it far ahead.”
Q: “What is something the Phillies need to work on to help them win?
A: “A good offense can help win any day, but for something like the playoffs you need a good balance between offense AND defense. Both are essential.”
After losing the 2022 World Series to the Houston Astros and barely losing the playoffs to the Arizona Diamondbacks, most people would expect the Phillies to be similar this year. But with a stacked batting lineup full of powerhouse hitters like Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos, Bryson Stott, and Brandon Marsh as well as a solid pitching lineup with Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez, Chris Sanchez, and recently resigned Aaron Nola, the Phillies will certainly be a force to be reckoned with during the playoffs. As long as the Phillies have a good balance of offense and defense and continue to perform as well as they have, the other teams better prepare for the chaos they’re about to endure.
