With Halloween almost a month away, people are starting to plan their costumes, but there are so many to choose from. The tradition of Halloween costumes goes back to over 2000 years ago. It started at Celtic pagan festivals, where people would dress up to celebrate the end of summer and the start of the “darker” half of the year. Around the 1960’s is when Halloween costumes started to become more fun and playful, like they are now. The Panther press surveyed 50 students around the school, asking them to pick 10 costumes that they think will be most popular from a list of 30 trending costumes. The top 10 list was then decided in order of what costumes got the most votes.
1. Barbie
Barbie got the most votes with 40. Barbie has always been a well known brand, but started to emerge into huge popularity when their movie came out in July 2023. There was a big trend where people would dress up as Barbie when they went to see the new movie, and that transferred over to Halloween as well. Since there are 100s of different Barbies that you can dress up as, it is also really popular because it is pretty easy to find a fun option with all the variety. Barbie is a costume that all ages enjoy, which is another reason why it’s number 1, but it is especially popular with young teenagers.
2. Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine got second with 36 votes from students. Deadpool and Wolverine was one of the most popular movies this year, and it was very highly anticipated by people. The Deadpool franchise was, and still is, really popular, with the actor Ryan Reynolds starring in all three Deadpool movies. People went bat crazy over the combination of Deadpool x Wolverine, making it a great duo costume. Even though it is a hard costume to replicate, it will definitely be a very popular one because of how viral the movie was.
3. Inside out
Inside out placed 3rd with 33 votes. In June they released a second movie with new emotions and it became very popular. Like the Barbie movie, it also became a trend to dress up as one of the emotions when going to the movie. These costumes are also not too hard to replicate as their outfits are just simple things like a sweater, shirt and tie, or green dress. It is very popular with younger ages as everyone enjoys the Disney cartoon. However, teenagers especially relate to it as they say they feel as if they “grew up” with Riley because she is now a teenager in the second movie. It will probably still continue to be popular this Halloween as it just came out in June and there is also a nice variety of emotions you can pick to dress up as.
4. Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice had a grand total of 32 votes. Ever since the first movie, it has always pretty popular, but with their second movie just coming out this month, it will be an especially popular option at this Halloween. The characters are also more on the creepy side, which is another reason why it’s a good option. Beetlejuice is very popular with older teenagers and adults, making it pretty high on the list, but since it isn’t as popular with younger teenagers and kids, it’s not higher, because more younger kids dress up than older kids.
5. Joker and Harley Quinn
Joker and Harley Quinn are another really popular duo. They placed 5th with 31 votes. A movie was released with both of them in it this year that became very popular. Harley Quinn has always been a popular Halloween costume that people loved to use because it is very fun and almost every costume store sells it. In their new movie, Lady Gaga played Harley Quinn, which made her even more popular. Joker is also a popular costume that lots of costume stores sell, so putting them together is a good duo. It is more of a couples costume, even though it doesn’t have to be, which is probably why it isn’t higher on the list. However, it is pretty age relevant to all ages, and can be a good costume for younger and older people.
6. Devils and Angels
Devils and Angels got 29 votes. Devils and Angels have always been a popular costume with teenagers because it’s really easy to dress up as, and it’s not based on a movie, so the popularity never really goes away. It is such a perfect duo costume for friends, which is another reason it’s so popular. Duo costumes are really trending with teenagers right now, and this is one is just so perfect. It could also easily be turned into a couples costume. It is safe to say that you can definitely find a devil or Angel costume at any costume store because it’s such a classic option. It is also not too hard to DIY your own since you can both wear such an array of different things, and you can customize it to make it fun and unique.
7. Minions
Minions costumes, most known from the movie Despicable Me, arrived at number 7 with 28 votes. Despicable Me has always been a fan favorite movie among kids and teenagers. 4 movies, along with prequels and sequels, has made the producers millions in the box office. With the newest one that came out this year, more kids will want to be minions, making it an easy and popular costume to dress up as. All you really need is a blue jumpsuit and some goggles and you’ll be set. It is also a common Halloween costume that you can find at costume stores.
8. Princesses
Princesses received 28 votes. It got the same amount of votes as minions, but we made the executive decision that because of the new minion movie this year, minions would be more popular. Princesses are especially popular with little kids who dream of being a princess. Older ages also can enjoy dressing up as princesses with their friends since there are so many options. They are also another big classic that are around every year and never die down. Of course, the popular movies and trends of the year are going to overshadow princesses, which is why they aren’t higher on the list, but they will always be a classic.
9. Animals
Animals got 23 votes. These are of course another super classic costume that is great for all ages. With the thousands of animals in the world there is also a huge variety of ones you can choose from, and people can use animal costumes multiple times by just choosing a different one. It is also an easy costume to replicate because you can make or buy a really simple animal costume if that’s all you want, or you can make it really complicated and complex, which is why it is a great choice. But just like princesses, the trends of the year will of course be more popular since these will always be around.
10. Halloween Entities
Halloween entities received 22 votes. These entities include any Halloween or creepy character classics like zombies, ghosts, pumpkins, clowns, etc. Of course, this is a great option because they are especially Halloween related. Lots of people also love the creepy aspect of Halloween and these types of costumes can really fulfill that. In addition, these are probably the easiest type of Halloween costume to find at a Halloween store. It can also be perfect for any age, and of course is a good option every year. We are surprised these didn’t get higher on the list since they are just so perfect for Halloween, but with all the Halloween costumes out there top 10 is good.
