In the 1920’s, ten teams gathered in Ohio to create the American Professional Football Association, which is now called the National Football League (NFL). In that same year, four more teams joined, so that made 14 teams, and it just grew from there. Lamar Hunt, the owner of this league, named the national final championship the Super Bowl because his kids were playing with a super ball toy at the time. He thought it was funny and expected it to be changed eventually. There has been a total of 58 super bowls, this year being the 59th. Playing in the 2025 Super Bowl will be the Eagles and the Chiefs. Which can be thought of as a rematch game from the Super Bowl two years ago. The Chiefs have been in a total of six Super Bowls, winning four. This year will be the seventh. They became a team in 1959 and joined the NFL in 1970. The Eagles have been in four Super Bowls, winning one of them. This year will mark their fifth. The Eagles team was formed in 1933. They were one of three teams to join the NFL as an expansion team. Everyone was able to pick up to three teams each. We surveyed a total of 140 students/teachers on their favorite football teams and these are the results.
- Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles got the most votes with 99. This is no surprise considering they are a local team and they got into the Super Bowl this year. Even some people who aren’t huge Eagles fans are rooting for the Eagles this Super Bowl since they are against the Chiefs who have gone undefeated two years in a row so far. Saquon Barkley is a running back for the Eagles this year; he was previously on the New York Giants team. A lot of people are mad about the loss, considering he’s been doing very well on the Eagles and even helped get them to the Super Bowl this year. The New York Giants never did too well.
- Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills got second with 36 votes. They lost in the playoffs this year to the Kansas City Chiefs. This is the fourth time in the past five football seasons that the Chiefs ended the Bills’ season. The Buffalo Bills have been in four Super Bowls – however, they have not won any of them. The Bills got through 17 games this year, winning 13 of them. So it appears that they had a pretty strong season, their final score being 13-4. They even placed 1st in the AFC East. The Bills have been competitively playing in the Football League since 1970.
- Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers got third place, just two less votes than the Buffalo Bills, with 34 votes. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowls, out of the eight they have played in. This year they lost against the Baltimore Ravens, the final score being 14-28. The Steelers placed second in the AFC North. The Steelers also made it through 17 games this year, winning ten of them. The Steelers joined the NFL in 1933, along with the Eagles. Their team was actually called the Pittsburgh Pirates until 1940.
- New York Giants
The New York Giant got fourth place with 25 votes. The New York Giants have been in the Super Bowl five times and won four times. The Giants are one of the oldest teams in the NFL; they formed in 1925. The Giants unfortunately lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, the score being 13-20. The New York Giants’ record this year was 3-14. The Giants sadly ranked fourth in the NFC East. This is pretty pathetic considering it is the exact opposite of the Eagles’ 14 wins and 3 losses.
- Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs got fifth even though they’re considered to be a huge rival to all teams. The Chiefs joined the NFL in 1970, but they were originally called The Dallas Texans from 1960-1962. They unfortunately did not break the world record of winning three Super Bowls in a row, since they got beat by the Eagles. This team is very controversial – people either love or hate them. They’re are a good team and play a good battle, but also Travis Kielce is dating Taylor Swift, who people either love or hate as well.
- San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers got sixth with 15 votes. The 49ers have gone to the Super Bowl eight times and won five times. The 49ers lost against the Dolphins in the playoffs. Their final score was 6-11 making them fourth in the NFC West. The 49ers’ season this year wasn’t as good as their season last year. The 49ers joined the NFL in 1946.
- Detroit Lions
Tied with the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions placed seventh with 15 votes. The Lions have made zero Super Bowl appearances. They are one of the oldest teams, founded in 1930. The Lions’ final score was 15-2, losing to the Washington Commanders in the playoffs but getting first in the NFC North.
- Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins came in eighth with 11 votes. The Dolphins played in the Super Bowl five times but only won two times. The Dolphins’ final playoff score was 8-9, ranking them second in the AFC East. The Dolphins unfortunately lost to the New York Jets with the score being 32-20. The Dolphins were founded in 1966.
- Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens came in ninth with 10 votes. The Ravens have gone to the Super Bowl two times and won both times. The Ravens ended their season with a score of 12-5 making them first in the AFC North. The Ravens lost to the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs. The Ravens were founded in 1996.
- Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks unfortunately came in tenth place, tied with the Ravens at ten votes. The Seattle Seahawks have been to the Super Bowl three times, unsuccessfully losing two times. The Seahawks’ final score was 10-7, making them the first in the NFC West. The Seahawks lost to the Washington Commanders in the playoffs. The Seahawks were founded in 1974.
