A lot went down at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards that occurred on February 2 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. From amazing performances to scandalous red carpet appearances, there is much to cover. Here are the top 10 moments from the Grammys that stood out to me the most:
10. Celebrity & Influencer GlamBOTs
You’ll always find Canadian filmmaker and director, Cole Walliser, at red carpet events with the GlamBOT camera. The Grammys are no exception. From popular influencers like Chris Olsen to sensational celebrities like Taylor Swift, many participate in this fun event. Freshman Lulie Khouri commented that, “Hayley Baylee had the best GlamBOT because she had the best dress.” I can agree that her GlamBOT result was pretty smooth and effortless. Some other GlamBOTs that had fantastic results were Madison Beer, Lady Gaga, and Chappell Roan.
9. Red Carpet Outfits
One of the best parts of the Grammys is seeing what everyone shows up wearing. Some outfits are absolutely phenomenal, whereas some make you wonder what on earth the person is wearing. My favorites include Sabrina Carpenter’s custom blue and feathery JW Anderson dress, Charli XCX’s Jean Paul Gaultier gown, and Taylor Swift’s gorgeous red Vivienne Westwood dress. There are many more people who dressed to impress, those are just some that stood out to me personally.
8. Benson Boone’s Performance
Right off the bat, Benson started his performance by revealing a sparkly blue jumpsuit that he had on under his formal suit. He wowed his fans with showcasing his song “Beautiful Things”, all the while doing stunts on stage. Sophomore Caroline Ottinger stated, “Benson Boone eats so much.” Junior Gabby Silva agreed and added, “Benson Boone doing a flip from the piano was insane.”
7. Sabrina Carpenter’s Performance
“And Sabrina, don’t even. So good,” Ottinger replied when asked about her renditions of “Espresso” and “Please Please Please”. Carpenter began her performance with a jazzy version of “Espresso”, and wore a sparkly, tuxedo-like dress. She even busted out some tap dancing moves after transitioning into a sparkly blue outfit. In between, she snuck in some parts of “Please Please Please” before switching back to “Espresso,” Junior Seihara Cluett added, “She’s such an icon and great artist.” I couldn’t agree more!
6. Raye’s Performance
Raye was already exciting the crowd with her beautiful, sparkly, black long sleeved dress. What captured the crowd’s attention were her insane vocals. While performing her song, “Oscar Winning Tears”, Raye went on several vocal runs that were longer than some of the speeches given that evening. And the whole time, she made it look effortless. Talk about talent.
5. Doechii’s Acceptance Speech & Performance
Doechii achieved quite the accomplishment that night — she’s the third woman to ever win the “Best Rap Album” award. The only other women who’ve ever received it being Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. Doechii gave a heartfelt and inspiring speech talking about her sobriety and how God showed her just how good things could get. She also performed two of her hits – “CATFISH” and “DENIAL IS A RIVER”- from her award winning album, “Alligator Bites Never Heal”. Khouri commented on her performance and stated, “I just think she ate. She deserves it because her songs got really popular this year.”
4. Chappell Roan’s Acceptance Speech
One of the industry’s newest stars, Chappell Roan, received the Grammy for “Best New Artist”. Roan stated to the audience that if she ever had the opportunity to win a Grammy, then she would shed light on “the most powerful people in music.” She did just that by giving an emotional speech about record labels providing their artists with a “liveable wage and healthcare.” Silva stated that her words were “very impactful, especially if it made the attendees cry.”
3. Kanye West and Bianca Censori’s Red Carpet Appearance
Censori is known for her provocative and scandalous looks – but her Grammy’s appearance took that to a whole different level. Her outfit left people absolutely shocked but also caused a lot of chatter. While conversing with Khouri, she stated, “The worst dressed was Kanye’s girlfriend,” and she jokingly added, “she wasn’t even dressed.” Censori showed up in a long, black and fuzzy coat, only to take it off and reveal, well… not much. How Kanye was okay with that, I don’t even know.
2. Kendrick Lamar Winning Five Grammys
Kendrick Lamar made quite the name for himself this year, due to his diss track on Drake called “Not Like Us”. The song alone awarded Lamar with “Record of the Year”, “Song of the Year”, “Best Rap Performance”, “Best Music Rap Song”, and “Best Music Video”. The fact that he won all of that for a diss track is pretty impressive. His producer, Mustard, even playfully said, “Get the broom out!”, a homage to Lamar “sweeping” Grammy after Grammy.
1. Beyoncé Winning “Album of the Year”
No offense, but who was listening to “Cowboy Carter”? Somehow, Beyoncé received this award, which ended up being very controversial. Sophomore Helen Cox stated, “Beyoncé is overrated.” Grammy watchers have theorized that Beyoncé paid to get this award. On the other hand, many fans were disappointed that Billie Eilish or Taylor Swift didn’t win the award. For one, Swift spent the majority of the year on tour, amplifying the popularity of her album, “The Tortured Poets Department”. Eilish’s album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft”, was also quite popular. Junior Violet Whitley states with passion, “Billie Eilish was robbed of Album of the Year.” Many fans agree with that statement.
The Grammys were quite eventful this year. Though much happened, these ten events can be seen as the most memorable from the night. Stunning outfits, fun and entertaining performances, and of course a little drama and controversy, created an impactful mark on pop culture as we know it today.
