On February 17, Toronto Pearson International Airport was the host of a horrible crash by a Delta Airlines Jet as it flipped on its head following a rough landing. The plane slid down the runway from the blanket of snow on the ground and while coming to a stop the jet spontaneously flipped upside down.
Out of the 76 passengers on the jet, only 21 were left injured and no fatalities were present. Two of the 21, however, resulted in critical injuries. The true reason for this incident is still being investigated by the Canadian Transportation Safety Board. The crash was captured on video by multiple air traffic controllers and even passengers on separate planes.
The incident occurred in the following order: the Delta Air Lines jet hit the landing strip as it arrived at the Toronto Airport at 1:15 p.m. CST. The plane, as it was braking, slid possibly due to the excess snow on the runway, rotating it while it slid across the pavement. As it turned sideways the right wing of the plane struck the runway, causing the plane to flip on its head.
According to Marco Chan, a former pilot and senior lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University, he confirmed that no suggested trouble was anticipated with the landing. He also added that the hard landing could have been caused by an unusually high rate of descent. The rough landing of the craft possibly caused the crash in the first place.
According to former FAA professionals, the crash was incredibly lucky for not erupting in any fatalities. They hail the plane’s safety features, saying that the broken apart wing was an intentional design in order to prevent it from tearing through any vital components. The planes were also said to be designed in order to protect passengers from being thrown around in case of this kind of emergency.
Quickly after the crash, emergency personnel arrived at the scene to suppress the small flames that erupted soon after the craft flipped. Flight attendants can also be praised for quickly assisting each passenger off the plane quickly and effectively. It’s thanks to these people that everyone survived.
This crash is one of many events that erupted these past weeks. Many people are concerned about aircraft crashes and the frequent rough landings. Even people around Saucon have had growing concerns of their safety in aerospace travel.
“Something needs to be done…” said senior Adam Clark. He is currently a flight student and planning to be an airline pilot in the future. However, even he is concerned with the frequent crashes happening all around the country. Students like him hope for increased safety and accountability from airliners like Delta Airlines.
