On February 11, Duolingo posted on their X account that their mascot had passed away.
“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead,” the post begins. “Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know?”
The app later posted a video showing Duo getting run over by a Cybertruck. Another video was posted showing that the two Duolingo characters, Lily and Zari, were carrying Duo’s coffin and placing it in the back of a truck, which then drove away.
“Til’ death duo part,” pop star Dua Lipa wrote in reply to the X post stating Duo’s death. The app had established the joke that Duo was in love with her, which made it funny that she responded.
Companies have also taken the time to share their condolences as well.
Chipotle posted a picture of Duo outside one of their locations with the caption reading, “i’ll always remember u this way.”
Many people have conspired that this is just a marketing stunt to bring the company attention and online interactions. It’s also thought to be a sort of rebrand in the making. Users will just have to wait and see.
In a post the day following Duo’s death, their account posted, “Together, if we really try, we can bring Duo back.”
