With the seasons changing from winter to spring, spring sports begin. These sports are softball, baseball, boys tennis, and track and field. For some of these athletes, these sports are one of the multiple they play. For others, these sports are the only sport they play.
“I will be doing track and field. In addition to track and field, I play club and school volleyball. I do it to stay active in my volleyball off-season,” said freshman Hailey Harlache. In addition to track, Harlacher was on the volleyball team during the fall sports season.
Playing multiple sports actually benefits an athlete. It builds endurance and strength. Playing one sport means the body is only focusing on those certain parts of the body.
Due to participating in multiple sports, these athletes are less likely to be injured. The other sports focus on other muscles, giving certain parts of the athletes body a rest. This also reduces the risk of a burnout.
High school is the time to try out for any sport and see how you like it. Many students who normally don’t participate in sports like track or tennis, are trying it out.
“I’m participating in track and field this spring. I’m most excited about being on a team, “explained freshman Emma Sauvagnargues. Sauvagnargues was varsity third singles on the tennis team. During the season, her and a group of teammates decided they would do track and field this year.
Track can help build stamina and endurance for when the fall season starts for girls tennis. Being a multi-sport athlete can be beneficial for the long run.
However, that does not necessarily mean it’s the only right path. Many people do one sport year round. This allows them to improve their performance and learn more about their game.
“I play varsity softball, but no other sports. I’m most excited to be back on the field with my teammates. Although I’m not a multi-sport athlete, I do think it’s beneficial. It challenges you both mentally and physically as an athlete,” stated junior Matty Seyfried. She does softball all year round and has become an outstanding player.
As the spring season begins, the sports change. People are trying new things, while others return to their main sport. Remember to come and support your friends as they compete throughout the season.
