The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees have been rivals for over 120 years, becoming arguably the largest and fiercest rivalry in baseball history. There are many reasons for the opposition between these two organizations, however the primary reason being their close proximity to each other. New York City and Boston, Massachusetts are only separated by roughly 200 miles making it a do-able four hour commute. It is one of the shorter distances between two teams in all of professional baseball, resulting in a larger percentage of away fans being able to make it out to a game.
Saucon Valley Senior pitcher committed to Texas A&M, Cole Hubert stated, “The last Red Sox-Yankee game I went to, Red Sox fans were throwing food and heckling some New York fans.”
Most sources claim the rivalry began in 1919, when Boston’s manager Harry Frazze traded the Pitcher-Position player combo Babe Ruth, the Great Bambino, to New York. The Great Bambino went on to be one of the most successful, famous, and historic players the sport has ever seen.
Following the poor decision Red Sox management made to trade away Ruth caused the club to spiral down into an 86-year drought. Where the Yankees went on to win 27 championships during Boston’s almost century long losing streak. This anomaly in baseball lore is now referred to as “the Curse of the Great Bambino.”
Currently the Yankees and Redsoxs have faced each other 2,311 times and the Yankees have the lead over them with wins with a record of 1,257-1,040-14. The interesting part of this and why the rivalry is so popular is due to their postseason record. They have a 12-12 record versus each other. So possibly this year they could see who the top dog is and for bragging rights who is the better organization.
The last time the Yankees and Redbox’s faced in the playoffs was the 2018 ALDS. The series went well for the redsoxs defeating the Yankees in the series 3-1. This was the most prevalent game but the also played a wild card game in 2021 and the Red Sox’s won that game.
Assistant head football coach and big Yankees fan, coach Brett Zieber said, “Even though in the past couple years Yankees have lost they overall have won bigger games and have 27 rings.”
The Yankees Red Soxs rivalry is without a doubt the best professional sport rivalry. This rivalry has taken place for over a century and has the most passionate fans.
