Social media tends to run peoples’ lives based on the way they act when they use it. Lots of people see sudden changes in people they care about due to being on Instagram or Snapchat all of the time.
Social media addiction can affect relationships through jealousy, decrease of trust, or social comparisons. This can take a turn considering how many relationships have ended due to these issues.
Coming from a mental health perspective, it can increase anxiety and depression due to social comparisons or exposure to idealized lives. People can post unrealistic things such as idealized body image. Jealously also plays a role in this area due to fear of missing out (FOMO) or just other peoples’ day- to-day lives.
It tends to make people self-conscious about themselves due to practices of certain beauty standards. It can also lead to addiction to certain apps which can efficiently increase sleep deprivation.
Social media apps are designed to be engaging, but can lead to inability to limit the screen time or leading to less productivity. This is a major factor for why a lot of kids cannot get their homework done.
Social media also sometimes contains inappropriate content for which younger users can be exposed to. A lot of factors of social media can be negative but there are some positive viewpoints of social media.
Some positive effects consist of stronger social connections, global news awareness, support for creativity, etc. A lot of people rely on social media during their day to day lives, there are a lot of negative and positive effects of it.
To conclude, I believe social media has its positive and negative aspects. I think one resolution to these issues could be spending less time on it by adding a personal time limit for yourself.
