On October 14, Marino released a new single called “Lust.”
The artist steadily gained popularity on social media platforms TikTok and Instagram over the past couple of years—his most notable song, “Devil in Disguise,” went viral a couple of months ago—and made his mark through meaningful lyrics coupled with a modern soundtrack. “Lust” is no exception to this trend.
Lyrically, Marino told a compelling tale. He depicted the dissolution of a toxic relationship through the perspectives of two of the seven deadly sins: Lust and Pride. Both sides went for the low-hanging fruit when it came to placing blame. Where Pride accused Lust of adultery and using her beauty to manipulate him, Lust accused Pride of never making time for her and letting his ego control his life.
One would not stop indulging in the love of others, whereas the other could not stop loving himself.
Marino collaborated with the artist Alexandria to help create a dichotomy between these voices. In comparison to some of his other works, the variation was a breath of fresh air—Alexandria’s voice cut through Marino’s typical sound without seeming forced. “Lust” followed the lead of other songs like “Devil in Disguise” and “Worst Enemy” with its slightly haunting tune (and a hint of self-deprecation), but this addition created an interesting twist.
I was not sure what to think of it initially, but it has grown on me.
Overall, Marino told a tale as old as time, but made it feel modern and new. Any fan of his previous works would love it.
