Minecraft is one of the best known videogames of the 21st century. Nearly everybody has heard of the game, if not played it themselves. The simple sandbox game was created by Markus “Notch” Perrson in 2009, and was formally released in 2011.

The game has no storyline, it is an open world experience where players have nearly infinite options of what they wish to do. The player can collect powerful armor and weapons to become as strong as possible. They can collect resources and build anything, only limited by their imagination. They can create complex machinery to automate processes using redstone. They can explore the randomly, and near infinite, generated world and its unique biomes and different dimensions.

Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, continues to update the game with new mobs and building materials, the most recent being The Copper Age update, which was added in September 2025.

Minecraft is the best selling video game of all time, with over 350,000,000 sales. The game inspired an entire generation of children and continues to this day. Minecraft has helped children learn about architecture, engineering, and coding, which many are now pursuing careers in. The legacy of this game is unlike anything seen before, and it will be remembered as the most influential game in history.
