“A Minecraft Movie” came to theaters April 4, 2025, and public opinions were mixed. The film debuted with a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but that didn’t appear to stop audiences from watching it. It raked in at least $805 million total, easily beating “Five Nights at Freddy’s” which was also based on a popular video game.
Clearly, how good a film is does not entirely determine how much money it will make. How much a movie grosses is dependent on several factors—the general quality only being one of them. So, how will “A Minecraft Movie 2” perform?
So far, it can be concluded that people are excited for the sequel. However, this opinion is only maintained when looking at a younger audience.
It’s hard to blame the adults for not being satisfied, given the jokes presented in the film that quickly spread like wildfire. It’s impossible to keep track of how many times the phrase “chicken jockey” has been said now, and one of the easiest ways to turn something fun to annoying is overexposure.
“A Minecraft Movie 2” needs something new if it doesn’t want to be viewed in the same way—different elements untouched by the first film. Luckily, the trailers imply at least one new addition to the cast, that being Alex.
There is also another concept from the game, Minecraft, that the original movie did not cover: the Ender Dragon. The Ender Dragon is effectively the final boss as you have to beat to see the game’s end credits. This dramatic addition could easily gain the attention of many new viewers, encouraging others to watch “A Minecraft Movie 2.”
Many people may be hesitant after the first film, but there is still plenty of time before the second movie officially releases, so “A Minecraft Movie 2” could theoretically be an improvement. It’s important to be patient and see how things change; if any leaks or trailers decide to come out, and what that does to public opinion.
July 23, 2027 will be an interesting day no matter what happens, and many people would likely watch the second film regardless. A love for “Minecraft” may be all the motivation the audience needs.
