“Bugonia” is a mystery, thriller and comedy film that released in theaters on Oct. 24, starring Emma Stone and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
With a budget estimated to be $45-55 million, Lanthimos created an English-language adaptation of the South Korean film, “Save the Green Planet!” by Jang Joon-hwan: “Bugonia.”
Both movies start the same, with a CEO being kidnapped by two men due to accusations of being an alien. The protagonist is a businesswoman by the name of Michelle Fuller, while her kidnappers are two loners named Teddy and Donny. The boys have a physical altercation with Michelle outside her home when she tries to enter, eventually leading to her being drugged and restrained in their basement. This is where Teddy confronts her about being of an alien species called an Andromedan.
Of course, Michelle denies the accusation at first. But after seeing Teddy experience violent outbursts and refuse to accept the idea she isn’t an alien, she eventually admits to being one. However, the brutality in the film only increases from there.
Jerskin Fendrix, whose real name is Joscelin Dent-Pooley, is responsible for the music backing the film. Overall, “Bugonia” is a bizarre watch, and Fendrix’s work only amplifies that factor due to the intensity and timing. The tone is consistent; almost funny, but clearly disturbing on some level, which works beautifully with the score.
Currently, the movie is sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 7.7/10 stars on IMDB. The ratings and reviews are overall not awful, but they could be better.
Unfortunately, “Bugonia,” while still an interesting watch, isn’t as satisfying as it could be. It has good tension, timing, and other intriguing factors, but the ending and themes are weak and unclear. The best thing to do is appreciate the good parts and hope what Lanthimos creates next exceeds our expectations.
