With the winter slowly approaching the Lehigh Valley, the question is asked: how much snow will we get? During the five winters before last year, we saw an average of 33 inches per year, but the most recent season had only about 18 inches of snow.
“I miss when I was a kid, and the snow would be up to my knees when I went to play outside with my brother,” says senior Kira Young.
Recent findings for how much snow we will get reveals that we should be expecting to get more of a “bookend” winter. This means the most snow we will see will be towards the beginning and end of the season.
“I would be happy with any amount of snow as long as I get at least one day off [from] school to spend however I want,” says senior Tristan Dennis.
Although the overall amount of snowfall in the Lehigh Valley is decreasing, the more northern areas such as Hellertown and up towards the Poconos are reported to expect more snow than places such as Allentown.
“I always went sledding with my family on the big hill we had behind our house as kids, and now I can’t remember [a recent time] when we even had enough snow to go and do that,” says freshman Kaiya Smith.
This recent decrease in snowfall has been one of the side effects of global warming. It causes intense heat to linger longer into the fall season—an example being when it was eighty degrees in October. However, it also causes the winter season to be colder and colder every year while also diminishing our snowfall.
“It makes me upset that my kids most likely won’t get to experience the kind of winter I grew up with because of how hot the planet is becoming,” says senior Logan Matthews.
This winter season is still expected to get a little over a foot of snow, but it doesn’t match up with the previous years’ worth. Many people are disappointed and frustrated that things are changing for the worse when it comes to the snow.
