The Las Vegas Raiders are once again at the bottom of the NFL playoff standings despite making multiple big signings and draft picks this past offseason. The big name players and coaches brought in this season include Geno Smith, Ashton Jeanty, Chip Kelley, Pete Carroll and Brennan Carroll.
Ashton Jeanty has been good, considering how bad the offensive line is. However, Smith, Carroll, and Kelly have been nothing short of complete failures.
Smith leads the league in interceptions, while not throwing that many touchdowns to offset the interceptions. He is not a mobile quarterback by any means and he can’t avoid sacks—which is important because there are defenders in the backfield almost every play. Not to mention, he signed a two-year contract worth $75 million, making him one of the most expensive quarterbacks in the league, while simultaneously being one of the worst.
Pete Carroll may be a Super Bowl winning coach with many achievements under his belt, but it is time to call it a career. Him and his son, Brennan Carroll, who is the offensive line coach, have no idea what they are doing. They have one of the brightest, young star linemen in the league in Jackson Powers-Johnson, but refuse to play him at his natural position: center. There is a very good chance that Pete Carroll and his son will be fired at the conclusion of this season.
Chip Kelly is also a very renowned and respected coach in not just the NFL, but college football. The Raiders signed him to become their offensive coordinator and made him the highest paid coordinator in the NFL. After only a handful of weeks of leading the worst offense in the NFL, however, he was fired. After his firing, stories came out about how he would give Geno some plays that weren’t even in the playbook—essentially setting the team up for failure.
As long as the Raiders do not decide to start winning now and get a worse draft pick, I do not think that this year has been a complete waste.
