While many people argue that Rob Thomson shouldn’t be fired, and it’s the offense’s fault for not winning, I do not agree.
Rob Thomson has the best winning percentage out of every coach that has coached the Phillies. I truly believe that if he didn’t have one of the best teams in Phillies’ history, he would be regarded as one of the worst managers in the MLB, and everyone would want him to get fired.
To start game three in this year’s postseason series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers, Rob Thomson had the bright idea to have Trea Turner, the National League batting champion, to bunt. Obviously, Trea didn’t get on base. This moment, for me, solidified that Rob Thomson has no idea what he is doing. He has one of the best hitters in the National League and wants him to bunt to start off the game.
Another thing that he has repeatedly shown that he is incapable of doing is managing the bullpen. An instance of this once again came up in the postseason during game four against the Dodgers. In the bottom of the eleventh, Thomson brought in Orion Kerkering, someone who has a spotty reputation when it comes to getting outs with runners on base. He was also one of the two main culprits for blowing the 2023 series against the Diamondbacks. And as probably everyone could guess, he blew it. Every Phillies fan was getting flashbacks from that 2023 series.
Finally, he never shows any heart. If a player gets called out on a horrific call, he just sits there, chewing his sunflower seeds. He has only been thrown out six times in the last three seasons. A lot of other teams managers will get ejected more than six times in one season. You know why? It’s because they actually care.
I just really hope the Phillies come to their senses and fire him. I don’t know if I can watch another season of passionless baseball. If they were to fire him, I hope that they would hire someone that has played baseball at a high level before, and is actively looking for a coaching position. Albert Pujols perfectly fits this description.
