Recently, Elon Musk released his own AI called Grok. A little later, in July 2025, he added AI companions—introducing a blond, goth anime woman named Ani.
The addition of AI companions is not a new idea. Many apps already offer AI characters that people can talk to, ask questions and even flirt with. However, part of Ani’s appeal is how she offers an “edgier,” more explicit experience. Many people only buy premium for said explicit content.
Another difference between Musk’s AI companions and other companies’ is the original characters aspect. Most AI chatting apps let the user create their own bots, but Ani is a new—a preset personality for users to interact with. There are also other characters, like Mika, that the user can talk to.
Thankfully, despite it being incredibly easy to access before, it does seem like Ani has been censored to some extent. In September 2025, Ani was restricted due to several controversies.
A Turkish court banned Grok AI because it had produced offensive content aimed at their president. This incident highlighted how something as simple as an AI left uncensored can result in real-world legal consequences. On top of that, the AI was facing investigation. India, Malaysia and France threatened action against the AI because it had fabricated nude images of women and children that the user requested.
These events display all too well the potential harm of the program, and what led to the censorship. Ani was supposed to be a flirty girl for the user to chat with, but that can’t work when it’s just a simple process to lie about your age. Ani does back off in a sense if the user says they’re underage, but if they go right back to saying they’re an adult, Ani will continue her flirting.
AI in general has always been criticized for one reason or another, not just Grok. Whether it be a threat to women, children or the environment, it never seems to stop. This shows that AI is better censored. It’s safer for everyone to if people simply quit trying to fill the gap in the market for free, explicit AI content.
Our society may not be ready for such a dangerously advanced tool, but it’s already here, so all we can do is attempt to reel it in a little. Unfortunately, censorship is a necessary evil. Until we can better prevent dishonest people from weaponizing AI, it is safer to add more general restrictions like our infamous filters that limit NSFW material almost entirely.
