The beginning of this season for the Philadelphia 76ers made me feel something that I haven’t felt in a very long time. Hope. With the team going 4-0 to start the season, I truly believed that this was the year.
Now that they have played their first 10 games, that feeling of hope is starting to fade.
Their point guard, Tyrese Maxey, has been absolutely incredible. He is averaging the third most points with 33.2 points per game, while playing the most minutes per game in the league. Along with Maxey, guard V.J. Edgecombe has also been playing amazing. As a rookie, he is averaging 16.3 points per game, including a 34 point debut, which was the most in a debut since all-time great center Wilt Chamberlain. He is playing the second most minutes per game, only behind Maxey.
Not just specific players, but everyone as a team have been playing very well. It looks like they are having fun while playing, which is causing them to play loose and have good chemistry. This happens in every part of the game except for the third quarter.
In the third quarter, the Sixers are last in the league in offensive and defensive rating. Offensive and defensive rating is the team being graded on how well they score and how well they play defense. For reference, they are top five in offensive rating in the first, second, and fourth quarter. Whatever is happening in the locker room at halftime is not working. They look drowsy and the game plan looks like it was torn up and thrown in the trash.
As of right now, it is too early to tell how the rest of the season will go. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and predictions.
I think that the Sixers will finish the season 49-33 and go into the playoffs as the fourth seed. I don’t really think that this year will be the Sixers’ year to win the championship. Next year when Edgecombe and McCain take that next leap and turn into solidified stars, the Sixers will win it all.
